For five years I have been making images of my collection of natural fibers, considering a natural world that is less familiar due to technology and exploring the fibers sculptural qualities in abstraction.
Since the 1960s, natural fibers have increasingly been replaced by low cost synthetics in our clothing and furniture. Technology and convenience have taken us farther from the natural origins of our goods. In order to increase awareness, I have been making images of natural fibers acquired from farms around the world, such as sun-dyed wool from sheep, silk from silkworms, and cashmere from Himalayan goats. These images reveal the natural fibers inherent sculptural and textural qualities and honor their position in our lives.
